2024 Entre El Cielo Y El Suelo at Art House, CDMX (Mexico)
Gallery: Art House, MX
Location: Mexico City, MX
Date: September 27 – November 16
Curation: Carlos Algara
The idea for this exhibition emerged from the waters of the seemingly opposite hemispheres along which the latest works of Roberto Cortázar and Tori Pounds navigate. The first bases his pieces on an abstract aesthetic, bordering on the unrecognizable, but invariably speaking about the origin and creation of the figure, of the human being, of the universe.
The second explores the romance in the mundane, and in the immediately discernible everyday scenes; sometimes figurative, other times staged. And yet, when placing the works of both artists side by side, a balance is perceived that is difficult to describe: the discovery of an improbable dialogue. It is after the fortuitous unveiling of said discovery that we become aware of the complicity shared by the works of these 22 artists.
The attraction between opposite poles is evident in some, while in others, a transition is perceived that travels from the real to the imaginary, and allows us to meander through the rooms of this space in an elliptical manner, finding an evolution that shows it is through the narrative and the themes that we find coincidences between all of these artists’ works. Love, loss, hope, fear, vulnerability.
These universal themes weave the narrative of the exhibition, and let us see that in the end, all of these artists speak about the same thing, that which lives between the earthly plane of the ephemeral day to day, and the celestial plane of the magical and abstract: the blatancy of being. Ourselves. The answer, perhaps, to the ultimate question of the meaning of life: art.
